From the Middle High German word "meiger," meaning "higher or superior," often used for stewards of landholders or great farmers or leaseholders - today a Meier is a dairy farmer. Meier and Meyer are used more often in Northern Germany, while Maier and Mayer are found more frequently in Southern Germany

Spelling variations include: Mayer, Maier, Meyer, Meier, Mayr, Meyr, Myer and many more.

First found in throughout southern Germany, where the family was anciently seated.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Hans Mayer, who was the first bearer of this name to arrive in the New World. He came to Lancaster, Pa., in 1709. During the next 150 years, close to five hundred bearers of this name came to North America, most arriving in Philadelphia between 1730 and 1760, and in Texas between 1830 and 1860.
