Eli, Robert, Nancy, and Daisy

Eli died on March 6, 1922, and is buried in Stony Point Cemetery next to David and George.  Nancy is buried a short distance away across a driveway, and is separated from both the Shively and Taylor families.

A divorce action was initiated by Nancy in 1915, and was dismissed a month after her death.  It must have been rare occurrence in this rural, agrarian society for a member of the Church of the Brethren to be involved in the dissolution of a marriage.  This could have been the reason for her burial location away from other family members.

This family photo appears to have been taken in the summer prior to Nancy’s death, and reflects the somber mood of the family.  There is little joy in any of the faces and an uncomfortable separation between Eli and Nancy.  The picture was likely taken on Sunday after services at the Camp Creek Church at the family homestead in Section 3 of Etna Township, which is presently owned by David Shively.
