John "Jack" Merklein

John Jack G. Merklein passed away May 8, 1998, at the age of 93. He was born May 26, 1904 at the house of his parents in Phillips County where he grew to manhood.

Jack was baptized on June 19, 1904 and confirmed on April 7, 1918 with

 I Timothy 6:12 as his confirmation verse at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, east of Stuttgart. On December 6, 1933 he was united in holy matrimony to Hazel Hempler at Emmanuel. He was a member of Emmanuel his entire life and served on the church council, was a member of the building committee and Lutheran Brotherhood.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, of the home; son, Don and his children, Scott and Kevin, Phillipsburg, Mitchell and wife, Shelly and their children; Kali, Erin and Lauren of Kiowa; daughter, Karen and her husband, Lawrence Dietz and their children; Lacey and Laurs, Phillipsburg; Bradley and his wife, Maria and children, Dylan and Jack, Olathe; Gary and wife Susan, Hays and their children; Mark and wife, Lea and son Zachary, Pt. Hueneute, California and Sarah, Hays; a brother, Alvin, Prairie View; four sisters; Martha Vogel, Freda Eltiste and Hilda Miller, Phillipsburg and Emilie, Prairie View.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 12 at 11 a. m. in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Stuttgart with Pastor Bill "J" Terry Jr., officiating.

The congregation sang "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," and "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less" accompanied by organist Phyllis Merklein.

Casket bearers were: Steve and Bradley Dietz and Mitchell, Mark, Scott and Kevin Merklein.

Interment was in the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Stuttgart.

Arrangements were handled by Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

PHILLIPSBURG -- Hazel Merklein, 91, Phillipsburg, died Tuesday

Nov. 16, 2004.

Mrs. Merklein was born Hazel Hempler on Sept. 27, 1913, in Phillips County. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John, died in 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Don of Phillipsburg and Gary of Hays; a daughter, Karen Dietz of Phillipsburg; two brothers, Helmuth Hempler of Kensington and Orvie Hempler of Borger, Texas; a sister, Anna Bethke of Phillipsburg; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stuttgart. Burial will be in Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Phillips County.

Memorials may be made to Phillips County Retirement Center or the church.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 Second, Phillipsburg 67661.

Lawrence L. Dietz

Lawrence L. Dietz, 71, Phillipsburg,

died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at his home.

He was born March 7, 1936, in Stamford, Nebraska, to Phillip Adolph and Ruby Isabella (White) Dietz.

He married Karen Ann
Merklein on May 2, 1959, in Stuttgart. He was a retired truck driver for Farmland Industries.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Steve Dietz, Phillipsburg, and Brad Dietz, Olathe; a brother, Dan Dietz, Littleton, Colorado; three sisters, Phyllis Patterson, Logan, Janice Reifsteck, Aurora, Colorado, and Kaylinn Dixon, Roseville, California; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg; burial in Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, both at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Memorials are suggested to Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church or hospice services in care of the funeral home.
