Obituary

William Herman Bohling

William Herman Bohling was born August 16, 1856 at

Schwalingen, Hanover, Germany, and passed away at the home

of his son, Clarence, Wednesday, July 14, at the age of 91 years,

10 months and 28 days.

He was baptized in infancy in the Lutheran church and confirmed

April 6, 1871 at the age of 15 years.

At the age of 15 years he emigrated to the United States in 1874,

coming directly to Nemaha county. For several years he worked

as a day laborer preparing himself for his chosen occupation of farming.

In 1878 he was united in marriage with Mary Ottens. This

marriage was blessed with seven children, six of whom are living;

one having died in infancy. In 1886, after having lived on

several farms in the county, Mr. and Mrs. Bohling moved to

the farm which became their home and the present home of

Clarence Bohling. Here they resided for 31 years. Mrs.

Bohling passed away in October of 1917. Mr. Bohling

continued to farm until two years later, when he moved to Auburn.

Three years later, in the fall of 1920, he was united in marriage

to Emma Zielke of Emmetsurg, Iowa. The couple lived for

several years at Emmetsburg, and later moved back to Auburn,

where Mrs. Bohling passed away on May 5, 1937. Mr. Bohling

continued to make him home in Auburn, until he finally returned

to his former farm home to reside with his son Clarence.

Mr. Bohling has always been strong of build and in good health,

it was not until the past few years that his declining years began

to take their toll of his physical strength.

The deceased was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran church

(Hickory Grove) for many many years. He was known as one

of the responsible standbys of the church congregation.

He took an active interest in the affairs of the community in

which he lived, proof of which is his business associations as a

member of the directorate of the Auburn State Bank.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his six children, Henry A., Auburn;

Mrs. John (Mary) Rogge Sr., Johnson; Mrs. Henry (Matha)

Schlange, Auburn; William, Jr., Herman and Clarence, all of Auburn.

Also 28 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 16, at 2:00 p.m., at the

St. Paul's Lutheran church (Hickory Grove) conducted by

Rev. W. A. Hummel.

Pallbearers were: Arnold Bohling, Walter Bohling, Elmer Schlange,

Vernon Krogman, H. W. Bohling, Emil Rogge.

Interment in Hickory Grove cemetery with Casey and Timm

Obituary

Mrs. William Bohling

Died Tuesday Morning

Death Came Suddenly and

Peacefully During Night

Ready to Go for Operation but Grim Peeper Overtook Her

Born in this County and  Was Well Known

Ready to go to a hospital and there submit to an operation advised

a week ago by a physician and after which she came home to get

ready, Mrs. William Bohling, Sr., passed away a the family home

near this city some time during Monday night. Death came peacefully and quietly and the spirit departed into the great beyond from which no traveler returns and where there is no more suffering nor naught but happiness and contentment.

About a week or a little more ago Mrs. Bohling had consulted a

specialist and was advised to submit to an operation. This was agreed

too, notwithstanding the nature of the trouble was not revealed to the

husband, nor to the patient. However, they returned home and started preparing for the ordeal, and it was when these preparations were practically complete, and at a time when the loved wife and mother was feeling but little different than she had been for some time that the death angel claimed her.

The funeral services were held yesterday forenoon at the Catholic church at 10:30 and the body was buried in the Catholic cemetery. Father Feeny officiated at the services which were largely attended by sympathizing friends of the bereaved family and people who had known Mrs. Bohling since childhood.

Mary Ottens was born in Nemaha county, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ottens, early day homesteaders in the county. Here she grew to womanhood and here she has passed her entire life since her birth April 1, 1861.

Married to William Bohling, the union was blessed with five children, Henry, Mrs. John Rogge, William Jr., Mrs. Henry Schlange and Herman all of whom with the loving husband and father have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends. One brother, Barney Ottens, lives in Colorado.
