THE JOHNSON NEWS

DECEMBER 25, 1924

DEAR OLD LADY GONE

After several weeks of intense suffering, followed by an attack of gall stones and stomach trouble, Mrs. Mary Barbara Stadtler Eltiste passed away at her home in Johnson, early Friday morning, December 19, 1924, aged 73 years and 8 months.

Born in Höttingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany,  April 19, 1851.  She was baptized in the Lutheran faith when one day old, being confirmed in latter years.

In 1881, she left her native country, locating at South Branch, now known as Cook, Nebraska. July 5, 1881, she was united in marriage to Frederic Paul Eltiste, a widower, at Helena, near Cook. Four sons and three daughters were born to this union. Theodore, the youngest child passed away in infancy.

Since 1882, the deceased has lived in or near Johnson. The family moved from the Cook vicinity in that year to what was known as the Reverend Feistner farm five miles southeast of town. Thirteen years later, they moved two and a half miles southeast of Johnson on the farm where her son Herman now resides. Since 1918 her home has been in Johnson. The husband and father passed away September 8th, 1920. Following his death, Mrs. Eltiste spent much of her time with her children, until her Granddaughter, Miss Helen Bohling of Auburn entered Johnson high school, since which time, she and Helen have been very amiable companions.

The deceased was a dear old lady, loved and respected by everyone. She was a devoted member of the Hickory Grove Lutheran church, six miles southeast of town, but owing to transportation facility she attended the Lutheran church in Johnson and was a valued member of the Ladies Aid of the St. Matthew’s church.

Rev. William Harder conducted the funeral services at the home of the deceased Monday afternoon, December 22nd. The choir sang her favorite hymn “Safe In The Arms of Jesus”. Services at the Hickory Grove church and cemetery were conducted by Reverend Theodore Streng. Several beautiful vocal selections were given at the church services.

Mrs. Eltiste leaves the following family to mourn her departure: A. C. Eltiste, Overton, Nebraska; Mrs. Christine Smith, Auburn, Nebraska; both step-children, Mrs. Sophia Kaiser, Phillipsburg, Kansas, Mrs. Minnie Wingert, Sumner, Nebraska, Mrs. Elizabeth Bohling, Auburn, Nebraska, William Eltiste, Overton, Nebraska, Paul Eltiste, Auburn, Nebraska, Herman Eltiste, Johnson, nineteen grand-children and many friends.
