THE JOHNSON NEWS

September 17, 1920 – Front Page, Column 4

FREDRICK PAUL ELTISTE was born in the city of Burgsalach, Bavaria, Germany, on September 6, 1850, the fourth child of his parents, Christian and Dorothy Eltiste. He grew to manhood in his home city and learned the stone mason trade which he followed successfully for several years.

In 1872 he was married to Annie Sophia Stadtler. To this union two children were born, both of whom survive him. In 1877 he came to America and settled on a farm near Osage, Nebraska, where he lived several years. His wife died in October 1880 leaving two small children.

July 5, 1881 he was married to Maria Barbara Stadtler and in March 1882 the family came to Nemaha County where he spent the remainder of his life.

He endured the many hardships of the early pioneer and did much toward the development of the country in which he settled. He was a true husband and a kind father. Was straight forward and honest and closely followed the Golden Rule in his dealings with his fellow men.

He departed this life at his home in Johnson on September 8, 1920 at the age of 70 years and 2 days.

Funeral services conducted by Reverend Spehr in English were held at the home Sunday afternoon. Interment was made at Hickory Grove, where a fitting ceremony was delivered by Reverend Streng, the pastor of that church of which the deceased had been a devout member for nearly forty years.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Barbara Eltiste, eight children, A. C. and W. F. Eltiste of Overton, Mrs. A. L. Wingert of Sumner, Mrs. H. C. Kaiser of Phillipsburg, Kansas, H. A. Eltiste of Johnson, Mrs. Fred Bohling, Mrs. David Smith and Paul Eltiste Jr., of Auburn. Also one brother and four sisters.
